The Quaker community has encouraged its members to participate in the work for positive social change since its beginnings. As Quakers, Abington Monthly Meeting members feel a shared sense of responsibility to address issues of peace and social justice, in our community and the world.
Here are some of the ongoing projects that Abington Monthly Meeting members support:
Sandwich Making for the Needy
On one Sunday of each month, members donate bread, cheese, luncheon meats, and their time to prepare sandwiches which are taken to a food distribution center in Germantown. Children are encouraged to participate.
Casserole Preparation for the Needy
Members are encouraged to prepare casseroles at home to be distributed at Face to Face in Germantown. Pans are available in the Meeting House kitchen, and instructions with recipes are taped inside each pan. Completed casseroles are dropped off at the Meeting House to be frozen, and the frozen casseroles are delivered monthly.
During the summer months, children have helped to create peace signs for Meeting members and the children to carry during outdoor demonstrations. Our Peace and Social Concerns Committee will also organize peace demonstrations on an ad hoc basis.
Equal Exchange Fair Trade Products
On one Sunday of each month, our Peace and Social Concerns Committee sells coffee, tea, chocolate drink mix and candy bars – to support small farmer cooperatives in their efforts earn a decent living for their families.
Interfaith Food Cupboard Collection
We collect non-perishable food items for monthly local distribution to those in need. We also collect and distribute personal care products, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, razors, etc.
AMM Right-Sharing Fund
This fund provides financial aid for Local Service Organizations who serve families and individuals in their time of need.
Abington Monthly Meeting members and attenders also minister to each other through active participation in various committees, such as Care of Members, Property, and Inreach/Outreach. Please refer to our Committees page for more information.
